The Southeast New England Program (SNEP) at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Region 1 (New England) is pleased to invite you to our second SNEP Symposium on June 12, 2024. Participants will have an opportunity to learn about the latest research on environmental issues facing the southeastern New England coastal region, hear about the success of new approaches, and broaden their understanding of regional issues and solutions. This Symposium will be an all-day in-person event and will include both plenary and poster sessions. This is a call for Presentation and Poster Abstracts. Below are instructions for submitting abstracts and/or posters. We welcome submittals from all interested parties with preference to projects/research located in or relevant to the SNEP region.
Challenges Facing the SNEP Region
SNEP is a geographic program that encompasses three tribal nations, the state of Rhode Island, and the watersheds of southeastern Massachusetts. First launched in 2012, SNEP has developed a significant local presence as a funder, technical assistance provider, and facilitator for solutions to address the region’s critical environmental challenges now further exacerbated by the worsening effects of anthropogenic climate change.
This symposium reflects SNEP’s role in convening subject-matter experts, practitioners, decision-makers, and researchers to exchange and foster ideas and information on the environmental science and innovations needed to realize SNEP’s goals of ensuring safe and healthy waters; thriving watersheds and natural lands; and sustainable communities throughout the SNEP region.
Symposium Tracks
SNEP invites poster and speaker presentations on new and/or successful climate adaptation and resilience practices being incorporated throughout the SNEP region as they relate to the following goals and objectives:
Track 1, Safe and Healthy Waters: Waters support native seagrasses and aquatic life, plentiful native fish and shellfish, and a variety of water-based recreational opportunities
Track 2, Thriving Watersheds and Natural Lands: Watersheds provide essential ecological functions, species diversity, and protection from both human-based and naturally occurring environmental stressors, and healthy, connected natural lands support a variety and range of native plant and wildlife communities.
Track 3, Sustainable Communities: Communities share robust water-based economies, protect and provide access to natural lands, open spaces and parks, encourage local food sources, and are adapting for resilience to expected impacts of climate change.
This Symposium is an excellent opportunity for researchers, academics, Tribal and municipal partners, past and present SNEP grantees, practitioners and others working in the SNEP region to share their work as it relates to regional climate resilience, innovation, and adaptation.
Presenters will be selected and organized based on relevance to SNEP’s mission, goals, and priority actions as outlined in the 2021 – 2025 SNEP Strategic Plan.
