Infrastructure Asset Management Systems – What are the best options?

November 30th, 2018

The new NPDES MS4 permit requires municipalities to map and manage their municipal infrastructure for tasks such as catch basin cleaning, outfall sampling, and street sweeping. Though many communities have been successfully completing these tasks for years, this requirement may be more easily managed through the use of technology.

Many different asset management software options exist to streamline this process.  Modern asset management software typically includes:

  • Tablets to link work in the field to your desktop computer and database;
  • GIS-based platforms to help locate and track infrastructure;
  • Systems to track and prioritize work; and
  • Built-in electronic forms and work orders to streamline tracking information.

There are dozens of asset management software options on the market today. Many municipalities work with contractors to develop systems specific to their community. Others use off-the-shelf software that has been tailored to their needs. Choosing the appropriate technology can be difficult.

The Water Finance Research Foundation** conducted a comparative analysis of 12 different options. CEI reviewed those software packages and other options. A summary of each program is provided in the table below.
