CEI’s Advantage
Firm Stability
CEI is still owned and operated by its original owners along with the addition of two principles promoted from within. Unlike larger companies, we are not susceptible to the pressures of shareholders that jump at the chance to sell, merge, move or fold – we are owned and operated by our employees. We started in New England, serve New England and expect to remain in New England serving municipal, government and private clientele. We consistently post profits and continue to grow at a steady and manageable rate.
Job Security
CEI has never laid off an employee. We are at a distinct advantage over other firms in that we don’t hire based on individual project awards but on market opportunity. That’s not to say that we don’t get hired for larger projects, but when we do, we have the staff flexibility and variety of expertise so that larger projects can easily be incorporated into our backlog without having to hire and then layoff. Additionally, when certain markets decline, we have the variety of expertise and multidisciplined staff to promote other areas of our business. This allows us to ensure a solid backlog of projects for all of our staff without having to worry about market fallouts. Finally, our presence throughout the New England states with our two main offices allows us to shift work throughout the firm. Our CEI offices work together as opposed to separate entities making it easy for us to distribute work where we need it and ensure everyone is busy.
Experience
Many hesitate at joining a smaller firm due to lack of project variety therefore hindering the experience a person could gain here. This may be true for some firms but definitely not at CEI. Our staff thrives on working on innovative/cutting edge projects and that’s what we give them. That’s not to say that we don’t continue to offer our traditional services but it only adds to the variety of projects we work on and the experience we gain throughout the process. Our projects range in size from <$1,000 in some cases to contracts greater than $500,000 with an average project cost of approximately $50,000. There are many attributes to like about CEI, and no matter who you talk to whether it is an engineer, scientist, planner or our administrative personnel, it’s never boring and we’re always working on something new.
Opportunity & Advancement
CEI has a vested interest in seeing our employees develop and advance. We are interested in our employees career goals and do our best to help attain them. We want everyone here to have the opportunity to advance as well as work on projects that are interesting and challenging. We don’t see the benefit of holding a person back if they can achieve more, especially since one person’s achievement leads to success for everyone. As mentioned earlier, we’ve promoted principals from within and expect to do so in the future. We have an extremely low turnover rate for both junior and senior level individuals, many who began here right out of college and have attained senior level and principal positions and who are now leaders in their field - a telltale sign of ample opportunity for growth and advancement.
Atmosphere
As our benefits page demonstrates, CEI is able to provide big firm benefits to each CEI employee. That being said, there are many ‘other’ benefits of working for a firm like CEI, notably our work atmosphere. We maintain a casual but professional work environment with little micromanagement and great flexibility. Our staff can be found working independently and in groups depending on the project. Either way, they have the freedom to create while still having the resources to ask questions and learn.
What our team has to say about CEI…
- "CEI has given me the opportunity and support to grow professionally without limitations and with the freedom to pursue my own interests. The atmosphere is a warm learning environment aimed to emphasize my strongest qualities while building a multi-disciplinary set of skills"
- "CEI's diversity offers me greater opportunity to be involved with all aspects of environmental and engineering projects. The broad variety of environmentally related projects has allowed me to gain considerable experience in project analysis and in developing unique design solutions"
- "The best thing about working at CEI is the variety of work that you can be involved in from day to day. For a civil engineer starting out, it was great to be trusted with a lot of different tasks. Your work can vary from surveying drainage structures, to working on wetland permitting, to using AutoCAD and GIS programs, to writing feasibility studies, to walking through the woods locating monitoring wells with a GPS unit. I haven't been bored yet!"
- "I get a wide variety of projects to work on, people never get 'pigeon-holed'"
- "I get to work on my own projects with a high level of trust from the top; no one is looking over my shoulder, but there's help when I need it"
- "We often do high quality, cutting edge projects that set new benchmarks for our industry."
- "There is minimal administrative burden and internal bureaucracy."
- "The company has a family feeling; everyone is approachable and friendly."
- "My background and educational experience are frequently used; I feel like a resource of information within my own niche."
- "I like the casual, unstuffy environment, there is never a dull moment here and we get good benefits and rewards for top performance."
- "Working for CEI provides a challenging, fast-paced workplace that promotes creativity, innovation and teamwork. A mid-sized company, CEI is small enough to offer a "family" atmosphere while still large and successful enough to offer "large company" benefits and advantages to employees."
- "It's never boring. I have the opportunity to work on a large diversity of projects, which keeps the work interesting and challenging."
- "CEI encourages and supports personal professional growth. You can quickly enter a project management role if you are ready."
- "I enjoy the variety of environmental projects and CEI's initiative to pursue new topics in the environmental field."
